A Message to a Hardworking Leader

 Dear President Marcos,

I am writing this letter to express my feelings about you and your administration. I am a 10th grade student from Vigan, Ilocos Sur, and I have been following your political career since you became president in 2022.

First of all, I want to say that I admire your courage and determination to pursue your vision for our country. You have faced many challenges and criticisms from your opponents and the international community, but you have never given up on your goals. You have shown strong leadership and charisma in dealing with various issues, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the territorial disputes in the South China Sea, the economic recovery, and the peace process with the rebel groups.

Secondly, I want to say that I appreciate your efforts to improve the quality of education and health care in our country. You have increased the budget for these sectors and implemented reforms that benefit the students and the patients. You have also supported the development of science and technology, especially in the fields of nuclear energy, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. You have made our country more competitive and innovative in the global arena.

Thirdly, I want to say that I respect your loyalty and devotion to your family and your legacy. You have honored the memory of your father, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., who was a great leader and a hero of our nation. You have also defended the reputation of your mother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos, who was a patron of arts and culture and a humanitarian. You have also nurtured your children to become responsible and patriotic citizens.

However, I also want to say that I have some concerns and questions about some of your policies and actions. For example, I wonder why you have decided to extend martial law in Mindanao until 2024, despite the opposition from human rights groups and civil society organizations. I also wonder why you have allowed the burial of former President Joseph Estrada at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, despite his conviction for plunder and corruption. I also wonder why you have pardoned former Senator Leila de Lima, despite her involvement in the illegal drug trade and her criticism of your administration.

I hope that you can explain these decisions to me and to the Filipino people, because we deserve to know the truth behind them. I also hope that you can listen to the voices of dissent and dialogue with them in a respectful and democratic manner. I also hope that you can uphold the rule of law and protect human rights in our country.

I hope that you will not take this letter as an insult or a threat, but as an expression of my sincere opinion and curiosity. I still support you as our president, but I also want to understand you better as a person. I believe that you have the best intentions for our country, but I also think that you can improve some aspects of your governance.

Sincerely,

Ron Iosif M. Buenaventura
